Direct answer

Fill dirt builds volume. Topsoil supports the finished landscape.

Use fill dirt to raise grade, fill depressions and build a base where organic growing material is not needed. Use topsoil near the surface for sod, seed, planting and landscape finish work.

Fill dirt

Lower-organic material for volume, rough grade, low spots and site shaping. Pricing varies by source, cleanliness and screening.

Topsoil

Higher-organic finish material for turf and planting. Product quality and screening vary, so current source pricing matters.

Grading and low areas

Estimate the volume needed to reach the proposed grade, then allow for settlement and compaction. Do not place topsoil throughout a deep fill when only the upper growing layer needs it.

Why dirt prices are quoted

Fill dirt and topsoil are less standardized than numbered stone. Screening, organic content, moisture, source and availability can materially change the product and price. MSS therefore requests a current source quote instead of publishing a false fixed number.

Quick answers

Asked before every trip.

What is the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?

Fill dirt is subsoil used to build volume, raise grades and fill low spots, and it compacts more predictably. Topsoil is the growing layer used near the surface for sod, seed and planting. Most yard-raising projects need fill dirt for the bulk and topsoil only for the finish.

How much does a truck trip of fill dirt or topsoil cost?

Fill dirt and topsoil are quoted at current market pricing rather than a fixed public rate, because source, quality and haul distance vary. Send the quantity and ZIP code to get a current quote from an available provider.

How much should I allow for settling?

Loosely placed fill settles. A common planning allowance is around 10 percent extra, and the calculator includes an optional compaction allowance for exactly this reason.

Request / 01

Price the material. Then price the trip.

Send the project, ZIP code and access details. An available provider can confirm the material price, delivery fee and schedule.

Normal minimum: approximately one full tandem-truck trip. Smaller orders may not be economical.

Submitting a request does not schedule service. The accepting provider confirms the quote, terms, truck capacity, receiving or disposal arrangements, and availability.
